Your first-hour checklist

Six checks, in order

  1. Record your screen. Start before the first login and keep it running. This costs nothing and is the difference between a claim and an argument.
  2. Log in with the credentials exactly as delivered. Do not change anything yet.
  3. Confirm the password worked.
  4. Confirm the 2FA secret produced a code that was accepted.
  5. Open the mailbox that came with the account and confirm you can read it.
  6. Look for a checkpoint or restriction notice on the account itself.

Those five checks map one-to-one onto what the warranty covers. If all five pass, the goods were sound and the account is yours to secure.

Only then

  • Change the password.
  • Replace the recovery address with your own.
  • Move the 2FA secret into your own authenticator.

Doing any of these BEFORE the checks above voids a claim in practice, because a modified account can no longer be shown to have arrived faulty.
