Checking and replacing the recovery address

The recovery address is who can take the account back. Making it yours is the first thing to secure.

A recovery address is the route back into an account when the password is lost. Whoever controls it effectively controls the account, which makes it the single most important thing to move into your own hands โ€” and the reason to check it before you do anything else.

First, check what is on file

Open the account's security settings and read the recovery address listed there. Confirm it is either the mailbox you were given or an address you own. An address you have never seen is a problem, and it is a problem worth raising immediately.

An account whose recovery address you cannot access is a defect, and it is covered โ€” the window is 3 hours from delivery. Check it before you change the password, not after.

Then make it yours
